Book Description
See Chicago Through the Eyes of its Writers...

Discover the Windy City that has attracted and nurtured writers, editors, publishers, and book lovers for more than a century. Trace the steps of literary figures who called Chicago home, incorporated cityscapes into their writing, and put a uniquely Chicago stamp on their work. People like novelists Ernest Hemingway and Richard Wright, poetry pioneers Harriet Monroe and Gwendolyn Brooks, playwrights Charles MacArthur and David Mamet, journalists Ben Hecht and Mike Royko, and documentarians Jane Addams and Studs Terkel.

Visit the historic dwellings of writers such as Carl Sandburg, Edna Ferber, and Saul Bellow. Stroll through the neighborhoods of such characters as Theodore Dreiser's Sister Carrie, James T. Farrell's Studs Lonigan, and Sara Paretsky's V.I. Warshawski. Glimpse into present-day Chicago through the insights of resident authors like Ana Castillo and Scott Turow.

Literary Chicago combines anecdotes and excerpts drawn from the city's rich literary legacy with walking tours that guide readers to historic sites, settings from Chicago classics, past and present literary hangouts, and current events for readers and writers.

About the Author
Greg Holden has lived in the Chicago area all his life. He grew up in the suburbs, and for nearly twenty years has lived on the city's North Side. He studied literature and writing at the University of Illinois at Chicago, where he obtained a Master's Degree in English and Writing in 1982.

For many years Holden has worked as a writer himself. He was a reporter for a suburban group of newspapers, and later worked as an editor and writer at the University of Chicago. During his time at the University, Greg began to study with Molly Daniels, a novelist and director of the Clothesline School of Writing. Greg has read from his own poems and stories at Jimmy's Woodlawn Tap in Hyde Park, as well as other locations around the city.

Since 1996, Holden has been a full-time writer of books, articles, and columns on computer and Internet-related topics. He has written nine titles, including Creating Web Pages for Kids & Parents, Small Business Internet for Dummies, and Starting an Online Business for Dummies.

To take a break from the computer, he likes to go to coffeehouses and bookstores. He also enjoys visiting antique malls, where he often adds to his collections of items such as fountain pens, old watches, and hats. He continues to rehab his house and stocks with fish a pond in his backyard that he made himself. He is an active member of Jewel Heart, a Tibetan Buddhist meditation and study group based in Ann Arbor.
