"This well produced republication is a welcome contribution to the growing body of scholarship on the history of science in Ireland. ...Despite its great economy and convenience I wonder if today's physics undergraduates are taught to distinguish clearly between the rather abstract algebra they use and the relationships in nature which it represents. I often have the feeling that many learn to manipulate the formalism successfully but are none too clear about its physical meaning. The laws and relations of classical physics are for the most part grounded in proportions between distinct physical quantities. If physics teachers were to read Helsham, and give selections to their students to read, they might recover together the excitement and understanding of a mathematics which makes its relationship to nature utterly clear."
