Book Description
If you have ever speculated about the deep meaning of existence, or the true nature of the universe, the Discovery of Nothing is sure to be a real treat. Recommended for those who are familiar with general physics, and are interested in the philosophy of science. Here is a philosophy which shows that the base and common ground for what we do is the same for all of nature. Lyle Jacobson is impressed with the occurrence of opposite aspects of many things he encounters. He relates male and female, positive and negative charge, + and - numbers, and the occurrence of the binary system used in computers, to the binary numbers 0 and 1. He also examines modern scientific phenomena such as matter and anti-matter, quantum theory, and the order of the cosmos. Such concepts also occurred to ancient thinkers of the orient. From them emerged the Chinese concept of Yin and Yang, hot and cold human temperaments, and health and illness. In the Discovery of Nothing, Lyle Jacobson realizes that he has modernized the Yin and Yang concept to include modern science. If you are aware of Zeno's paradoxes, you will never see them resolved in a more convincing manner. Mr. Jacobson develops a view of motion from the binary nature of the universe. His view is that motion takes place between "emission" and "absorption" rather than being something observed while a mass traverses a series of points over time. This argument also strongly supports Heisenberg's Uncertainty Principle of quantum mechanics which simply stated that when we measure the position of the particle, we cannot measure the measure the momentum, and vice versa. In quantum mechanics, physicists generally believe that when the position is measured, there is a momentum to the particle, only that nature prevents us from measuring it. Jacobson says, we cannot measure it because position and momentum cannot occur simultaneously. The resolution of these paradoxes stem from Jacobson's view of the universe as being binary at it's foundation, and is no mean feat.
