Book Description
John G Webster is leads one of the world's best biomedical engineering / instrumentation and sensors / research teams. Based at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, he is the founder editor of the Adam Hilger Series on Biomedical Engineering (now subsumed into the Medical Science Series) and North American Editor for the journal: Physiological Measurement. He supervises PhD and Masters students in the Bioemdical Engineering Laboratory, and teaches Medical Instrumentation and Special Topics in Bioengineering. He is working at present to improve the ECG (electrocardiogram) monitor, so that it keeps working even when a patient is under the surgeon's electric saw. He's also working on an optoelectronic sensor to detect eyelid activity - so if you fall asleep he'll notice! This book is the third we at IOP have published where he edits chapters contributed by his research group. His other books are "Prevention of pressure sores" - sales about 350 and "Electrical Impedance Tomography" now out of print. Pulse oximeters are small sensor based instruments - like the one on the cover - which monitor the level of oxygen in your blood. The technology has been developed in the last ten years and has previously only been described in research books.
