Despite their differences in symmetry distributions, all crystals possess a space lattice. Author M. A. Bravais not only correctly deduced the fourteen possible varieties of space lattices consistent with the several symmetry classes, but he also invented the polar lattice—the forerunner of the reciprocal lattice, a key element to considerations of x-ray diffraction.
